SPNI: Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI), established in 1953, set in motion a tradition of citizen involvement aimed to protect Israel's environmental assets against the negative consequences of unbridled development. SPNI is the largest independent membership organization in Israel, with over 100,000 members (an equally influential organization in the United States would have a membership base of 5 million.)

The main goal of the SPNI: To conserve environment, natural, cultural, and historical heritage assets for the public in Israel and all over the world.

The main active areas of the SPNI are Environmental education and Promoting environmental activity in the community through hiking programs, workshops, youth movement and public campaigns. The SPNI considers itself as the watchdog and advocate for the few areas of open space remaining in Israel. To this end, SPNI monitors development plans brought before planning commissioners, provides data and alternative plans to decision makers, and raises public awareness.
